Luscious Lip Balms

Teenage girls love lip balm so I have put together a selection of different flavourings that are easily put together by teens or teens with parental supervision. They will only take 5-10 minutes to make so are ideal to include for a small group of teens.

Strawberry Shortcake Lip Balm
3 tbsp cocoa butter
1 vitamin E capsule
½ tsp cooking oil
2-3 menthol crystals
8-10 drops strawberry flavoured oil
You Will Need:
1 small plastic container with lid
I small plastic microwavable bowl
  • Put the cocoa butter in the bowl and melt in the microwave on a medium setting for 10 – 20 seconds, taking care not to burn.
  • Add the drops of strawberry oil and stir until melted and mixed. You may return to the microwave for 10 seconds or so if you need to.
  • Add the oil and menthol crystals and stir well.
  • Cut open the vitamin E capsule into the bowl and stir well.
  • Pour lip balm or spoon it into the container and let rest for 10 minutes before closing lid.
Chocoholics Choccy Lip Balm
3 tbsp cocoa butter
chocolate chips
1 vitamin E capsule
¼ tsp cooking oil
You Will Need:
1 small plastic container with lid
1 small plastic microwavable bowl
  • Melt the cocoa butter the same way as in the Strawberry Shortcake Lip Balm.
  • Add the chocolate chips and stir until melted. Use microwave for a few seconds if needed.
  • Add in the oil and stir. Cut open the vitamin E capsule and stir in well.
  • Pour the lip balm into the container and let rest for 10 minutes or so.
Other Lip Balm Suggestions:
  • Apple and Cinnamon
  • Bubblegum
  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate and Orange
Apply Lip Balms with a lip brush or a cotton bud to transfer the balm to the back of your hand or on to the lips. Then use little finger to spread it across the lips.

Cream Eyeshadows

These are another must have for all teens wearing makeup. What a great way of salvaging old or broken powder shadows, which we have all had at one time or another. Cheap and dead easy to do, cream eyeshadows are ideal for young fresh wrinkle free teenage skins.

Petroleum jelly
You Will Need:
Small clean container with lid
Tweezers, spoon or something you can use for removing powder from its compact or container
Clean Popsicle stick or toothpick that may be used for mixing eyeshadow
  • Start removing your powder out of its compact and into the new container carefully using a tweezers or spoon.
  • Add a very small amount of petroleum jelly and mix together. Always add small amounts as it is much easier to add than take away, the golden rule of cosmetics.

  • An old contact lens case makes a perfect container, just wash and dry thoroughly before using.
  • To help the cream eyeshadow last on the eyes you can use a primer underneath before applying OR
  • Dab the eyelids with water; allow drying, and then apply the eyeshadow.
  • Use cream eyeshadow sparingly, building up the color intensity.

Eyeshadow (black, brown, navy, turquoise or any vibrant color you wish to create a unique look)
You Will Need:
Small container with lid
Glass, cup or small bowl
Popsicle stick, toothpick or even a chopstick for mixing.
Mascara Wand
  • Using a teaspoon, take a small amount of petroleum jelly (about a grape size or small coin) and put into your bowl.
  • Add your eyeshadow carefully, scraping out the amount you require.
  • Mix together well and blend evenly.
  • Pop on your lid.
  • Use an old clean mascara wand to apply or buy new wands in a packet.
  • Never throw out old mascara wands. Wash and clean them keeping them for separating lashes or for de clumping mascara on your mascara wand. Always clean afterwards to prevent any cross infection. Mascara’s are one cosmetic item that should never ever be shared with anyone else. Eye infections are easily transferred.
  • If your mascara tube feels solid or dry, make sure it is tightly sealed before popping it into hot water holding the top of it. This will help loosen any product to become more liquid.
  • Lightly brush a little bit of lose face powder on the lashes before applying mascara. This gives a thicker look to the lashes.
  • If you have small container without a lid use saran wrap to cover it and keep it airtight.

Our bodies have basic needs and if these basic needs are not met our bodies will either become malnourished or deprived. When this happens our body cannot grow because it needs more nutrients to grow. If you want to build muscle, you want to keep your body in an anabolic state as often as possible.

This is why they recommend that bodybuilders eat 5 - 6 smaller portion meals per day. It keeps the metabolism running fast, constant, and it keeps the body in an anabolic state.
Your body needs to stay in an anabolic state to build muscle and In order to keep your body in an anabolic state, its important that your body's requirements are fulfilled in hydrated, nourished and rested way.

If you're inserting contacts in your own eyes, you either have to learn how to do it their way, but without looking (which is not easy) - or you have to find a way to look and insert at the same time.

How NOT to insert contact lenses #1

Some opticians still teach the insertion method originally designed for hard contact lenses. Hard lenses had to be placed directly on the coloured part of the eye, because they stayed exactly where you put them. That's not necessary for soft lenses, and it's the most difficult way to put a lens in!
For one thing, when you see a finger headed for your cornea - which is highly sensitive - all your instincts tell you to flinch away. Not only do you have to overcome those instincts, but as soon as you have your finger directly in front of your eye, you can't see in the mirror - so you have to get into contortions to see past your finger, while at the same time holding your eye open with your other hand.
Soft lenses slide, so there's absolutely no need to put them directly on the coloured part of your eye.

The easy way to insert your lenses

Now for the secret! Let's put the right lens in first.
Stand in front of the mirror with your lens ready to insert on your right index finger. Now turn your head slightly to the right, while still looking in the mirror. Look at the eye farthest from the mirror - the coloured part of the eye is right in the inner corner, and you can see a big expanse of white. That's your target!
With your left hand. widen your eye. You can do this a number of ways - put your left arm over your head and pull on your top lid, or bring it up under your chin and lower your bottom lid - whatever works for you. Either way, your left hand doesn't obstruct your view of the mirror at all.
Now bring your right hand around under your chin. Still looking in the mirror sideways, put the lens on the white part of your eye. If it doesn't "stick" straightaway, you can rub it in tiny circles a couple of times. Now gently, push it in the direction of the coloured part of the eye as you straighten your head to look directly at the mirror. Blink a few times.
Your lens should now be sitting nicely in the right place!
The video below illustrates the idea of putting the lens on the side of the eye.  If you turn your head and look into the corner of your eye as I suggest above, you won't have to stretch your eye open like this guy does - it looks too uncomfortable!


How not to insert contact lenses #2

Because soft lenses slide, it's much easier to place them on the white of your eye and s-l-i-d-e them into position. Most optometrists do use this method nowadays  - but it's their starting point that's the problem.
A common method is to ask you to look up, then they place the lens on the white beneath your pupil and ask you to blink - and hey presto, your lens slides neatly into place!
Try that method yourself, and you'll find you have no idea where your finger is. You're just as likely to put the lens on your lower lid instead of in your eye, or knock it off your finger with your eyelashes. 
Slightly more practical is to ask you to look down, then they lift your top lid and put the lens on the expanse of white thus revealed. Then they let go your lid and ask you to look up and blink - once again, the lens should slip into place.
You may be able to master this version if you get a mirror that can sit almost flat on the bench - so you can look down into the mirror while you lift your top lid and place the lens on the white. Unfortunately, I find that lifting my top lid distorts my vision and I can't see what I'm doing clearly enough, so this method doesn't work for me either.

Lens Inserters/Removers

Contact Lenses
If you have long fingernails or arthritic hands, using your fingers to insert and remove your contacts may not be practical anyway. There are tools to help you, but choose carefully as some cheap versions simply don't work, or are so fiddly you might as well use your fingers!
When you're shopping for a lens inserter, make sure it's suitable for soft lenses. Many inserter tools are for hard or RGP lenses, and simply won't work with soft contacts. Also avoid the tweezer-type tools, even if they're labelled for soft contacts - they're more likely to tear the lens and can also give you a nasty poke in the eye, even with padded ends!
The only tool I've found which gets consistently good reviews is the Softsert Lensvue. I like the fact that it's transparent so it doesn't obscure your view, and the magnifier is a boon if your near sight is poor.

Removing contact lenses

You can remove lenses the same way you inserted them: put one finger on the lens, slide it on to the white of your eye, then pinch it out with thumb and forefinger.
However, once you've become used to putting things in your eye, you can probably just pinch the lens directly off the coloured part of your eye with your thumb and forefinger, without any trouble.
